An arraignment is a first appearance. At this court date, you will officially enter your plea on the record with the Judge. The Judge will advise you as to your rights, what the minimum and maximum penalties are that can be imposed upon you if you are found guilty of the offense you are charged with. You will also be given an opportunity to apply for a Public Defender. This would entail filling out an application, which is reviewed by the Judge who will determine if you qualify for the Public Defender or not. This application is available for download in our forms section. If you choose, you may hire your own attorney or proceed with your case pro se.
