TRENTON — New Jersey has begun mailing 2009 property tax reimbursement checks to senior and disabled homeowners.
State Treasurer Andrew Eristoff said today that checks for the program popularly known as "Senior Freeze" will average just over $1,100 this year.
More than 100,000 checks have been mailed to applicants who filed by June 1.
Homeowners can still apply until Aug. 2. However, new applicants will not receive reimbursement payments this year.
The program reimburses the difference between the amount of local property taxes applicants paid when they enrolled in the program and the amount paid in the current year.
New Jerseyans pay the highest property taxes in the country, an average of $7,300 a year.
