OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE

 

WHERE TO APPLY

 

If the ceremony is to take place in New Jersey, the couple must apply in the municipality where either the Bride or Groom legally resides. If they both reside outside of New Jersey, they must apply in the municipality where the ceremony will occur.

 

For Brick Township Residents:

Brick Township Clerk/Registrar Office, Monday through Friday, by Appointment Only. Appointments are scheduled from 9:00am to 11:00am OR 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Call (732) 262-1001 to schedule your appointment.

 

WHEN TO APPLY

 

Recommendation is to make an appointment at least two weeks before the ceremony. There is a mandated 72-hour waiting period from the time of application until you can use your marriage license. Weekends are counted in the waiting period; however we close at 4:00pm for pickup of the license for the weekend.

 

After the 72 waiting period, you may designate someone to pickup the license for you.

 

After the license is issued to you and picked up, the marriage license may be used in the State of New Jersey for thirty (30) days, after which time the license expires.

 

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

By Appointment Only

 

Present at application time

1.) Bride

2.) Groom

3.) One Witness with Proper Identification  - Must be 18 Years of Age or Older and Speaks English.

 

Required Documents:           1.) Driver’s License, Passport or State/Federal ID

                                                2.) Proof of Residency - such as a driver’s license, utility bill, lease, tax return, etc

                                                3.) $28.00 Exact Change or Check

 

Requested Documents:         1.) Birth Certificates

                                                2.) If Previously Married: Final Divorce Decree or Death Certificate

 

All documents must be English Translated if in a foreign language.

 

Must Know-  1.) Date of Marriage *

                        2.) Name and Address of Person Performing the Marriage (Rev., Pastor, Judge, Mayor, etc.)

                        3.) Bride & Groom’s Social Security Numbers

                        4.) Both Parents Birth Places (State only / If born outside of the U.S. – Country only)

                        5.) Both Mother’s Maiden Name

                        6.) If Divorced - Exact Date of Divorce & County/State in which filed

                        7.) If Widowed – Exact Date of Death of Spouse & Town/State where they passed away.

 

Blood Tests are No Longer Required to Obtain a Marriage License in NJ
