Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease And Mixed Dementia Are Added To Social Security's "Compassionate Allowances" Program

Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue announced the expansion of the Compassionate Allowances program to include early-onset Alzheimer's disease and mixed dementia. This program provides expedited review of disability applications from people with severely disabling conditions and was launched under Mr. Astrue's leadership in 2008. [ Read more ]
I believe that etanercept, which is injected into the spinal fluid, has been found to be effective in Alzheimer's patients. I have read that this drug binds with the excess TNF (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and the patient improves nearly immediately. Are there any neurologists in the Northeast who perform this injection? If so, how can I find them?
The arthritis medication Enbrel® (generic name: etanercept) is a TNF-alpha antagonist (TNF-alpha is an inflammatory cytokine). Studies suggest that brain inflammation may play a role in damage due to Alzheimer's disease and TNF-alpha secreted by glial cells in the brain may contribute to this damage. In a six-month pilot study in California, scientists found that perispinal injection (administration directly into the central nervous system) of etanercept produced significant cognitive improvements in all Alzheimer's disease patients (ranging from mild- to severe-Alzheimer's disease at the start of the study).
